This week’s mails leak from surveillance software vendor Hacking Team provided new details on the burgeoning growth of a private surveillance industry which has spread globally without any meaningful oversight and with Impunity. While revealing many new and concerning aspects of Hacking Team’s activities, it also confirmed a number of theories many Kenyans have been denying.
I was actually arguing with a friend about surveillance and he told me that he doesnt believe the NIS can do that . The cold fact is that knowledge about private information may be abused by Government leading to many Problems. Surveillance, Scanning emails and tapping Citizens calls is a violation to anybody’s privacy.
By the way I never thought Kenya is hacking team Client till I saw the Wikileaks exclusive leaks . As the story keeps unfolding, the Kenyan media is silent …Are they ignoring this hot Topic or the Kenyan media is flocked with adolescents who only care about socialites …
Past research showed that Hacking Team had 21 clients but as things keep unfolding, the list is longer- Our own Kenya shamefully included.
This list of clients includes a number of regimes known for violating the human rights of their citizens: Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Ethiopia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. Most egregiously, Hacking Team provided spyware to Sudan, a violation of a UN embargo on the sale of arms to the country, and appears to have misled a UN representative as to whether it had business relations with the country. Sudan was also designated a state sponsor of terrorism throughout the 2012-2014 time period, which raises the question of whether Hacking Team (which has US operations) violated the US ban on material support for terrorism.
So instead of NIS working to deal with terrorists, they are busy fighting Bloggers and government critics trying to shape the future of this country ! What a load of frog droppings !
Kenyans need answers as to why NIS would work with Hacking Team, we need the answers right Now
