After this site’s chief editor asked Kenyans to send their grievances involving banks, our email has been flooding with troubled customers who have lost money through the bank.
In this particular incident, a customer lost over 1.3 million shillings through the bank’s mobile banking platform Equitel.
“Hi Nyakundi, my cousin lost Ksh. 1.3 million through Equitel mobile banking at Keroka branch. After reporting to the police, the bank blocked both the SIM card and the account but again after 2 months he again lost 300k while the account and SIM card were still blocked.
In the first incident, the bank manager at Keroka claimed that my cousin had disclosed his Equitel pin to a third party but my cousin had never disclosed his pin number to even his next of kin who happens to be his wife. His Equitel SIM card had been swapped by known people who held accounts with EQUITY Bank Nakuru branch.
In the second incident, the same same people had a new third SIM card swapped and created by the same crooks in Nakuru branch that was used to transfer the 300k while the account was blocked and under investigations.
Is the Equitel Mobile Money safe or is it that Equity bank is stealing from it’s own customers?
Please help us find answers!”
