First Lady’s over-glorified Half Marathon will be held tomorrow in yet another public relations gimmick, a familiar trademark of the “talk-is-cheap” Jubilee regime. Corporates seeking political patronage and favours have contributed immensely to the cause, that still has no statistical data on its impact and benefit.
Multiple accounts reveal that majority of the ambulances donated to county governments are lying idle in county headquarters, and the equipment inside them either redundant or vandalised.
Last year the marathon was tainted in a scandal of epic proportion, where the course was not marked by Athletics Kenya-approved officers as confusion marred the route and also mode of competition. Many elite athletes were disrupted by instructions from organisers not to overtake the First Lady.
The company that had been mandated to oversee the entire First Lady Half Marathon concept IMG Kenya has since had their contract terminated, even though rumors are rife that there were political undertones in this decision.
IMG Kenya’s vocal CEO Charles Gacheru is said to have been part of former Devolution CS Anne Waiguru’s matrix, and his firm has been a victim of the realignment within Jubilee Alliance. According to Sunday Nation December 13th 2015, Gacheru was referred to as a “Waiguru Orphan” as his company had been contracted to do PR for the disgraced former Cabinet Secretary.
Together with Transcend Media ran by comedian-cum-politician Kiaria “KJ” John, the two firms are said to have reaped millions in dubious tenders from Anne Waiguru. Charles Gacheru was also appointed to the board of Kenyatta International Conference Centre through Waiguru’s influence and was one of the many joyriders that attended the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) under her patronage.
Kenyans on Twitter have been instead pleading with the First Lady to change tact and move from soliciting donations from corporates, and instead convince her seemingly aloof and out-of-touch husband and President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta to prioritise health budgetary allocations and make healthcare free and universal as promised in the Jubilee manifesto.
Oh well, and Millions in terms of hundreds of millions have been used to hype this event ?
