Caption: Tusky’s cashiers normally sit on improvised stools for prolonged hours, with many complaining of back problems, yet the same supermarket sells proper cashier-seats.
Tusky’s Supermarket has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons beginning with sibling rivalry that’s threatening to bring down the retail establishment.
Beyond that, there seems to be an emerging worker’s rights issue, which mouthy trade unionist Francis Atwoli is conveniently ignoring.
The question we pose to Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) is this; must whistleblowers contact this website to air their grievances? Don’t you have capacity to intervene in workers rights issues?
Today, we have learnt of the horrific treatment of staffs and interns at Tusky’s. Interns for instance are overworked and underpaid. Kshs. 10,000.00 to be precise.
They are also not remitting National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) and National Social Security Fund (NSSF) monies on behalf of staff.
Tusky’s also subject their staff to fatigue and stress by forcing them to sometimes serve customers while standing for prolonged periods.
Workers at Tusky’s are also put on a 10-hour shift per day, contrary to laid down guidelines.
For how long shall this be allowed to continue?
