A news article by Kenyan national paper, the Daily Nation, concerning Deputy President William Ruto’s botched trip to Uganda has become the latest topic of discussion on social media.
The front-page headline published on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, reported a suspicious passenger in Ruto’s entourage to Museveni’s land as the root cause of the red flags issued at Wilson airport on Monday afternoon when the second in command was blocked by the government from leaving the country.
According to a passenger manifest from Phoenix Aviation, Ruto was to travel with a 7-member delegation which included a shady Turkish national by the name Harun Aydin.
A quick search on the internet shows you that Mr Aydin is an old-time terror suspect who was once arrested in Germany in late 2001 and was found carrying suspicious luggage which included camouflage clothing, materials to produce explosives, as well as a chemical weapons protective suit.
In his other bags, DVDs containing training videos for Islamic holy warriors and a suicide note to his wife were found.
Mr Aydin was attempting to board a flight to Tehran in Iran.
According to The New York Times, Aydin was at that time a leading member of a militant group in Cologne, Federation of Islamic Associations and Communities, led by Muhammed Metin Kaplan alias the caliph of Cologne.
The group is said to have been responsible for planned serious acts of violence and were accused of acting on behalf of a major terrorist group with an Islamic fundamentalist background.
It was alleged that the Federation of Islamic Associations and Communities, had contacts with Osama bin Laden and his network, Al Qaeda, between 1996 and 1997.
They had over 1,100 registered members and their mission was to topple Turkey’s elected government and replace it with fundamentalist Islamic rule.
In some court documents, Aydin was accused of personally issuing instructions for serious crimes such as murder and manslaughter in several incidences.
Prior to being nabbed in Germany, Mr Aydin had been sentenced to four years in jail after he was found guilty of advocating the murder of a rival, Halil Ibrahim Sofu.
He was later acquitted of the crime.
The dead bromance dies on…
This latest incident saw the animosity between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto play out in broad daylight.
Witnesses at Wilson Airport said the DP and his team had used the VIP area in efforts to access the airside for their plane that was scheduled to leave at 1 pm when they were stopped by the immigration officials.
The stand-off at the airport lasted about five hours.
Sources said the MPs were the first to be blocked, but when a call was put to Speaker Justin Muturi, he cleared them, saying his office had nothing to do with the private visit.
The MPs and Ruto’s friends were then cleared to travel.
However, Ruto was not.
