Osman Khalif Abdi, MCA for South C, had a daughter with Abigael Mwero on 12th November 2018. The baby was born with some complications and doctors say she has a Global Development Delay, hearing disability and epilepsy, which requires her to undergo physiotherapy, occupational therapy and prescription medication.
Soon after the baby was born, Abigael filed a case at the Children’s Court in Nairobi, Case No. 816 of 2019, following Osman’s alleged refusal to provide maintenance for the child. On 15th July 2019, Senior Resident Magistrate, Hon. H.M. Mbati (Mrs) ruled in favour of the mother and ordered Osman – who did not appear in court – to pay Ksh 26,000 per month for maintenance, plus medical costs for the daughter.
After paying Ksh 150,000 plus a medical cover, which has since lapsed, Osman allegedly stopped providing any additional support, leaving Abigael to fend for their daughter on her own. Numerous promises by Osman that he will send the money he owes have failed to materialise.
Abigael claims that, as a member of the Nairobi County Assembly, Osman has the means to support his daughter but has simply refused to do so. She goes on to say that she has tried to provide the best care for their daughter but cannot keep up with the costs for the special care that the child needs, causing the child to fall behind in achieving her developmental milestones.
Abigael is now calling for Osman to obey the court’s orders for the sake of their ailing daughter.
