The Nairobi University’s Prof. Maurice Kizito Mangoli has died of Covid-19 related complications at the Nairobi Hospital. He hails from Bumula in Western Kenya.
Professor Mangoli’s death comes a day after Bungoma county laid to rest Dr Doreen Lugaliki who also succumbed to Covid-19. Dr Doreen also hailed from the same region.
Mangoli was Senior lecturer at the institution’s department of electrical and information.
Bungoma County governor Wycliffe Wangamati has mourned the professor as “a seasoned teacher, a well-travelled scholar and an expert engineer who has his name and handprint on several building projects dotting the city.” said Wangamati in a statement.
He continued to say that Bungoma county has suffered the brunt of COVID 19 Pandemic that continues to ravage the country.
“Let us stay alert and adhere to the advice given by our medical experts, ” Wamangati added.
This comes after The University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor Prof Stephen Kiama revealed on Friday that 2 staffers and students had lost their lives to covid-19.
“These are not mere statistics, University of Nairobi has also not been spared by this enemy, the Covid-19,” Prof. Kiama said.
During the virtual address to students and staff, the VC revealed that a lot has been put in place by the institution for learning to resume and continue without interruptions.
“This intervention brought life back to the university, as faculty and students began to engage. As we were gaining momentum, the challenge of cost of data emerged and threatened to roll back our gains,” Kiama said.
With cases in Kenya now standing at 10,294, five counties have reported increase in infections. Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Nakuru are recording upsurges with Kiambu having a 60% increase.
