Caption: CID Boss Ndegwa Muhoro whose major preoccupation is arresting bloggers not fighting crime.
You will all remember that President Uhuru Kenyatta once appeared on our TV sets, donning lipstick that made him look uber-ridiculous, telling humanity that “Security starts with you,” and in Swahili “Usalama unaanza na wewe.”
All of that was just a truck-load of sewage because StateHouse simply wanted to fast-track the purchase of bogus CCTV Camera’s from Bob Collymore, and spend over Kshs. 50 Billion in Jubilee’s first heist.
Read here Mary’s personal account about how a simple request to police for them to execute their mandate, turned her from informant to suspect. We know these cases happen all over Kenya, where police collude with criminals to subvert the course of justice.
Yet they are quick to arrest bloggers and confiscate our gadgets. Kenyan Police are no people you can rely on. Recently we have read of shocking details on how Criminal Investigations Boss Ndegwa Muhoro was bribed with Kshs. 50 Million in-order to oversee a foreign investor land being grabbed by former Central Bank Governor Nahashon Nyagah.
And yet Muhoro is still in office because of political patronage. What an embarrassment. Recently Capital FM wrote an editorial paying tribute and showering praises to Ndegwa Muhoro, in what seemed like owner Chris Kirubi’s attempt to clean his image as a favour so as to ensure Muhoro never arrests him over scandals at Uchumi an KENATCO.
Read here this personal account of police brutality, meted out at innocent Kenyans, as criminals and terrorists roam free.
Dear Cyprian,
Greetings. I have read this Kirubi and Muthoni article and thought of sharing this with you. My name is Mary. I have lived in Rongai for some time now since 2009. In 2013 August, I rented a hop to run a small hotel.
The plot belongs to one Mine Irine Njeri Muthanji just opposite KCB bank. When i entered, there was a an agent/caretaker called Macharia who gave me the shop and I paid to the bank account of Njeri who lives abroad. Upon presentation of bank slip, I was given keys to enter. Things went well until hell broke loose in 2014 around September.
The plot has 6 houses on a row right behind the shop and such the gate is one. Two houses had been vacant since I entered there and in the month of September a man with arabic/somali origin broke the door and entered one house which was next to my shop. He was married with 3 kids. This guy ordered me to give food on a daily basis with threats that the owner is his Aunt and so the property truly belongs to him.
Upon inquiring from fellow tenants, they said yes he is a relative but a very stubborn person and a run-away child. This guy by the name Salim Ngugi was a total menace to all the tenants because he would threaten to evict or kill us randomly and at will.
We decided to report to caretaker then Mr Macharia who in turn reported to the landlord and they actually cut off his power and water in a way to deterrent to see if it could send him off.
Salim remained and now targeted me causing obstruction of my hotel and threatening customers. We now decided to report to area chief who referred us to Ongata Rongai police station. We reported and obtained OBs. Nothing was done about this person. Salim by this time in December of 2014 had chased Macharia and now we remained under his mercies. The owner through Lawyer Makoloo and Makori advocates reported this to the CID headquarters and gave us that copy of report. Still this man was on rampage and my business was bearing the brunt of his impunious ways.
On 2nd of April 2015 when there was this Garissa bombing, that night, at around 9pm, there was a loud explosion that shook all of us tenants and even forcing my hotel clients to exit the building, which sounded like it happened inside our plot. All tenants met outside and decided to report the suspicious blast to the police. Amazingly after we all recorded statements at Rongai Police Station, the police took 24 hours to visit the scene. When they came, we showed them the house of one salim who we suspected because of his dubious character. The police resisted and said they cannot arrest him or even question him.
On 4th, the police came and arrested all the tenants and put us in cells for giving “false” information to police. We tried to reason with them based on the nyumba Kumi initiative and based on the letter that the landlord reported him to CID as having caused disturbance and threatening her tenants and that he was an intruder who was disowned by the herself, but the police would hear none of that. Each was held in the cells until paying Kshs. 5,000 Bonc pending court-hearing.
The court idea now became elusive as the police OCS Mr Kandie kept pushing dates that he was doing investigations untill ten days later, he took us to
Kibera Residents Magistrate’s Court on 15th where were charged and sentenced to Langata women prison because we did not have cash bail.
We slept in Langata until the following day, where we paid the court-bond and were released pending hearing. It has been ongoing case till 25th Feb 2016 when the Judge now ordered that he accusers, who are the state to appear on 23 and 24th June for hearing because they have never appeared. It has been a harrowing and traumatising experience.
As if that was not enough, the landlord has now ejected us from the plot distancing herself from the case How can you help? We are all women being subjected to this trauma and our crime was simply reporting the case to the Rongai Police Station.
Kind regards,
Mary.
