Leadership wrangles at the Nairobi County Assembly got uglier after Nairobi court suspended the appointment of Edward Gichana as the new clerk.
Employment and Labour Relations Court suspended the gazettement of Mr. Gichana on tuesday. The gazettement was done by embattled Speaker Beatrice Elachi last week. Gichana was hurriedly appointed to replace Jacob Ngwele who was serving suspension.
“It is hereby ordered that the appointment of Edward Gichana as clerk of the Nairobi County Assembly with effect from July 23, 2020 as published by the first respondent in the Kenya Gazette No.5072 of July 24, 2020 is hereby suspended pending inter partes hearing of the application herein,” reads part of the order.
Ngwele went to court on Monday seeking a conservatory order to squash the appointment of Gichana pending the service, hearing and determination of his petition.
Gichana was however sworn in a day after Ngwele resumed his role. Ngwele had been out for nine months pushing Speaker Elach to replace him.
Elachi maintained that Ngwele is a strangerand that he is no longer the clerk of the assembly.
This happens as the leadership crisis and push and pull between Governor Mike Sonko and Gen. Mohamed Badi continues.
Sonko has threatened to pull out of a deal that saw him transfer key county roles to Gen. Badi.
There is a section of MCAs who are also pushing for the impeachment of Sonko who was barred from accessing office because of corruption charges he is facing in court.
