Drama ensued at the Wajir County headquarters on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, when former Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud invaded the establishment and attempted to force entry into his office.
Confirming the incident, accomplished city lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi reported that the besieged politician arrived at the scene in a vehicle with fake registration plates and was armed with forged court orders which guards were reluctant to accept.
Sources on the ground say that despite the swearing-in of his former deputy Ahmed Mukhtar as the county boss, Mohamud has been calling the shots from the sidelines, insisting he is still the bonafide governor of the county.
Mukhtar took over the office following the Senate’s decision to uphold Wajir County Assembly’s decision to impeach Mohamud. undertaken by the Wajir County Assembly.
Power struggles
Since his ouster in May, the beleaguered county boss has been embroiled in a power struggle with his former lieutenant.
Following the decision by the Senate, Mohamud moved to court to challenge his unceremonious removal from office. The court granted stay orders which directed that he remains the county chief until the case is heard and determined.
But despite the court order, Mukhtar was still sworn in to oversee the county.
Last month Mohamud made an appearance at the Council of Governor’s meeting convened by Embu Governor Martin Wambora in Makueni.
The troubled governor is said to have arrived at the meeting earlier than his rival, occupying the seat reserved for Governor Mukhtar.
Mohamud was impeached on grounds of gross misconduct and misuse of office among other allegations.
His troubles worsened in June after the national government honoured the request by Mukhtar to have the cars assigned to his predecessor withdrawn.
Mohamud then went ahead and acquired the above vehicle with forged “GVN 001” plates.
