After years of serving life in exile, firebrand lawyer and politician Miguna Miguna is set to return home before the end of the year.
According to a statement by former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, he will personally fly to Canada and accompany the self-declared General back to Kenya on November 16, 2021.
“After careful reflection and following broad consultations with lawyers, human rights and justice defenders, progressive politicians, and Mr Miguna himself, I have decided to travel to Toronto, Canada, to accompany Mr Miguna on his flight back to his motherland on 16 November 2021,” reads part of the statement.
He said that he was taking the step as a way of enforcing orders that have been ignored by the government.
Mutunga further called out the government for infringing Miguna’s rights by not allowing him entry to his motherland, despite numerous court orders that allow him to do so.
Miguna was deported to Canada in 2018 after he swore in Raila Odinga as the ‘People’s President’ following the heavily contested 2017 General Elections.
In the deportation order, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i stated that Miguna was in the country illegally and his presence in Kenya was detrimental to national interests.
The State insisted Miguna lost his Kenyan citizenship after acquiring Canadian citizenship at a time the country did not allow dual citizenship.
