A week after this blog highlighted a growing extortion scheme at Parklands Arya Girls High School, more parents have come forward to substantiate the instances of fraud earlier presented to us, while unraveling further details on the untangling conspiracy.
In our previous article, this author reported how a worried guardian complained about the current state of affairs at Parklands Arya Girls in Nairobi, where the school demands exorbitant amounts of money to fund various ghost projects which are all tendered to construction companies associated with the principal.
Parents Expose Extortion Scheme At Parklands Arya Girls High School
This has left the overcrowded public school suffering from the inadequacy of facilities and learners have to struggle in an unconducive environment.
Other forms of extortion that were mentioned included excessive fees for uniforms and set books, which are typically provided by the government.
As one guardian confirmed to us on Monday, June 20, apart from greed that knows no bounds, the headmistress is also vulgar, arrogant, and full of pettiness.
She also loves to humiliate parents by shouting at them.
Despite full completion of school fees, she sends away those that cannot comply with extra payments.
Recently, they forced a group of Form 2 students to go home and fetch Sh10,000 for construction, Sh2,000 for motivation, and Sh1,000 for t-shirts as agreed in a past meeting.
This is the same dormitory towards which area MP Tim Wanyonyi contributed over Sh10m CDF to cater for the project.
Some learners confessed they never received the t-shirts.
The administration has also devised another money-making plot, where they ask fresh entrants joining Form 1 to pay Sh500 for a plate, spoon, and cup.
To ensure maximum profits, they completely refuse to accept utensils brought from “outside”.
As expected, they do not include all these amounts in any official school circular to avoid the legal implications of their unlawful venture.
For instance, last week they demanded the girls to pay Sh3,000 for purported remedial teaching, which was scrapped by the Kenyan government.
“Good afternoon Nyakundi,
First, I’d love to applaud you for the good work you do.
May God richly bless you.
I had earlier seen on Twitter you highlighted the plight that we parents at Parklands Arya girls go through.
Everything the parent said was right.
The principal looks for any means to milk us dry.
In 2020, my daughter joined Form 1.
I paid school fees and all the requirements they needed, inclusive of a melamine plate, spoon, and a cup.
When she was being admitted, the principal had ordered the teachers and told them we should pay Sh500 for the same plate, spoon and cup and completely refused to take the ones we had bought.
Last year my daughter was in Form 2.
Despite struggling and paying fees, they called for a meeting and demanded we pay Sh10,000 for dormitory, Sh2,000 for motivation and Sh1,000 for t-shirts, which they didn’t even give the students.
That headmistress is vulgar and arrogant.
She sent students home because of the above and, mark you, we had paid fees in full.
She sent parents and their kids out of her office and I quote, “Go back with those students. The day you get money, you can come back.”
She humiliates parents because she talks while shouting.
This year my daughter is in Form 3 and they were told to pay Sh3,000 for home science and Sh700 for chemistry.
They did not give them any circular or letter because they don’t want to be incriminated themselves.
Today we were called for a meeting and out of nowhere, she tells us to pay Sh3,000 for remedial teaching.
The last time I checked, the government had scrapped it off.
She was insisting and the parent who is the PTA Chairman didn’t even give the parents time to air their grievances or listen to their opinions, he just kept saying “Lazima tuelewane na tulipe hii pesa”.
Nyakundi, some of us live from hand to mouth and are surviving on loans.
Kindly expose them.
For the extras we pay, there’s no receipt given.
Thank you in advance,” the source writes.
Over the past year, this blog has covered many such cases where public institutions have been brought to light for crafting creative ways to levy extra fees without justification.
