Hours after a system disruption that saw Stanbic Bank Kenya shut down online and mobile banking systems, clients are still grappling with the aftermath of the distressing incident that left them temporarily locked out of their accounts.
In response to the Monday situation, the bank released a feeble statement, saying that the incident was under investigation and that they were taking all the necessary steps to ensure the safety of their customers’ data.
They, however, failed to address other key issues such as the safety of customer deposits and missing millions from accounts.
The bank claimed that “disruptions” in their IT systems caused the incident, but did not elaborate on the details.
Insiders who spoke to us under the request of anonymity expressed a strong suspicion that the incident was possibly a botched hacking attempt by unknown persons.
It resulted in an error that sent customers to surprise deposits in their bank accounts.
But what began as excitement quickly turned to confusion and panic, as they couldn’t access their funds online or through M-Pesa.
As things stand, the extent of the damage remains unclear.
Despite being assured that their data is safe, many customers are still worried about their money and question why the bank has sidestepped this subject.
