Following January’s terror attack at the dusitD2, Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i announced that all licenced firearm holders present their guns to the Firearms Licencing Board for vetting.
In adherence to this announcement, a prominent Kenyan surrendered 30 firearms to the great shock of Matiang’i and the board’s officials.
As the man slowly unpacked and displayed his collection of 10 shotguns, 18 assault rifles and several pistols and revolvers, everyone was in visible disbelief.
As the board displayed the guns to the media, the cabinet secretary said he was indeed shocked by the amount of highly powerful weapons at the hands of civilians and that some of those guns should only be in the hands of the Kenya Defence Forces and other special security units.
In reference to the embarrassing display by Kenyan politician and wannabe millionaire Steve Mbogo during the Riverside Drive Attack, Matiang’i warned civilians against using their guns for show off like they are some toys.
The board told the media that they have so far requisitioned 340 firearms and 5,371 assorted ammunition. They have also cancelled 36 licences that were irregularly issued.
